Volunteering

Some TLP volunteers talk about their volunteering experience.

Please be aware we do not offer placements to our volunteers.

Listening volunteers provide ongoing face-to-face support to visitors; we are seeking volunteers who are non-judgmental, empathetic, warm, caring and resilient.

The Listening Place asks that all listening volunteers commit to a minimum of one year of volunteering after completing their initial training, with a minimum of a regular four hour shift per fortnight.

Helping volunteers are the first friendly face our visitors see – they meet and greet our visitors, support their shift and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

We ask our helping volunteers to commit to a minimum of six months’ volunteering after their initial training. While we prefer them to commit to a regular weekly four hour shift, if that would exclude you from volunteering with us then please do apply for a regular fortnightly shift instead.

There is a three month notice period for listening volunteers and a one month notice period for helping volunteers.

Please indicate which site you would prefer – please be aware that we have extremely limited availability at Pimlico and Kings Cross, so if you proceed with your application we may ask if you are willing to volunteer at our Hammersmith site if necessary.

As The Listening Place works with a vulnerable client group it is not exempt from the provision of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Therefore all our volunteers need an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service certificate (DBS) which we will pay for.

If you think you may have a caution or a conviction on your DBS certificate, please let us know as soon as possible - depending on the nature of the caution or conviction, it may not be a bar to you volunteering with us unless it is particularly relevant to the position.
