On Wednesday, 2nd October, we launched our report ‘Suicide prevention: A Community-led Approach’ and hosted a panel discussion on how greater collaboration between public health, the NHS, and The Listening Place can help reduce suicide across London. The report focuses on TLP’s success in providing effective support in Hammersmith and Fulham and offers a blueprint for other London boroughs to improve services for people who feel suicidal.

Our speakers were Sarah Anderson CBE – CEO of The Listening Place, Dr Susan Cottam – NHS Clinical Psychologist, Dr Niki Lang – Director of Public Health Hammersmith and Fulham and Katie Foulser – Associate Director, South Region Rethink Mental Illness. The panel discussed the current state of suicide prevention, key at-risk groups and how to build effective local support networks. Key takeaways included an acknowledgement of the gaps in statutory provision, the need for community organisations that can take a slightly different approach to confidentiality, and the need for a whole-person approach which emphasises the person’s story rather than their level of risk.
